The ruby gets its red color from the crystals that make up the base mineral, Corundum. Corundum in its natural form is a deep red in color. Based on the concentration of these trace elements, the color of the sapphire would range from different shades of blue to even pink, yellow or opaque black. While sapphires used in engagement rings are usually blue in color, although sapphires in other colors can also be used, ruby engagement rings are purely red in color since rubies do not exist in other colors naturally.
